About the designers
In the development of carpet blue/green we had an advisory technical role regarding the choice of materials and technical possibilities, whereby we were happy to share our expertise with them.
The hand-knotted carpet 'carpet blue/green' measuring 2 by 3 meters is a collage of still lifes from Fien's photographic work, which Fien and Hannes put together into a new whole. The carpet has an edition of 8 editions and 2 artist proofs and is a real technical masterpiece.
The process of color selection, choice of materials and interpretation of the design were extremely complex. More than 40 different colors were worked manually by experienced weavers on vertical looms in knot workshops in Nepal.
Three different raw materials were used:
- Tibetan highland wool for a matte effect
- Cashmere silk for a shiny effect
- Pashmina wool for an extra white and soft effect
Pashmina wool feels very soft and is naturally whiter. The whiteness makes the contrast with the colored surfaces greater. The 'gradient' in the blue part is in natural silk and ensures dynamism and vibrancy in the design. The colored wool parts are more matte and richer in contrast and provide a harmonious dampening effect.
Due to a coherent alternation of raw materials, the perception of the viewer changes as the incidence of light touches the matt woolen and beautiful silk parts.
Valerie Traan Gallery showed the very first carpet at Interieur Kortrijk 2016. The carpet is currently back in our carpet house.
After a succesful first collaboartion we have now also Carpet blue/yellow based on a drawing by Muller van Severen: a collage of Fien's work. Both the color selection and the choice of the right materials was a very complex process. The interpretation and conversion of the design into a carpet was therefore not easy. The carpet consists of more than 46 colours. The beautiful intense background goes from lighter blue down the full width of the rug to shared top left a very dark intense blue color and the top right slightly lighter intense blue, which creates a particularly beautiful effect. The beautiful yellow in 100 percent pure chinese silk is contrasted against a woolen blue background.
