Ashtari is honored to have collaborated with the talented duo Hannes van Severen and Fien Muller on this special project. The 'carpet blue/green,' measuring 2 by 3 meters, is a technical masterpiece that showcases the artistic vision and passion of Fien and Hannes. It is a collage of still lifes from Fien's photographic work, meticulously crafted into a harmonious whole.
Our role in the development of this carpet involved providing advisory technical support in choosing materials and exploring technical possibilities. We are proud to have shared our expertise with Fien and Hannes to bring this extraordinary piece to life.
The complexity of the project is reflected in the meticulous process, where over 40 different colors were manually woven by experienced artisans on vertical looms in in Nepal. The use of three distinct raw materials — Tibetan highland wool for a matte effect, Cashmere silk for a shiny effect, and Pashmina wool for an extra white and soft effect — adds layers of texture and visual richness to the carpet.
The 'gradient' in the blue part, made from natural silk, introduces dynamism and vibrancy to the design. The alternation of these materials creates a unique play of light and shadow, enhancing the viewer's perception as they interact with the carpet.
The first unveiling of the carpet took place at Interieur Kortrijk 2016, hosted by Valerie Traan Gallery. Currently, the carpet is displayed at our carpet house.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS
Muller Van Severen was founded in the early Spring of 2011. With both Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen being artists, it’s natural that the collection sits somewhere between design and art. The couple has been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects, always including the space around it, and characterized by a careful research into their shared passion for art, architecture and materials. At the same time Muller Van Severen’s designs appear to be created almost intuitively and with total effortlessness. It looks as if the designers draw with crayons in space.
After winning countless awards and collaborating with prestigious museums (such as Vitra Museum, Centre Pompidou and Musée d'Art Decorative Paris) and galleries (Galerie Kreo, Side Gallery, Valerie Traan Gallery) worldwide, Muller Van Severen is considered to be one of the most image-defining European design teams of today. Their creations are globally identified in both private homes and public spaces. All of Muller Van Severens own production pieces are handmade by small-scale fabricators and skilled artisans, with an honesty to the rawness and irregularity of the chosen material.

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
We are privileged to announce our collaboration with Hannes and Fien for the creation of this extraordinary hand-knotted carpet. This project emerged from a shared respect for each other's craftsmanship and individuality. The synergy between collaborators is crucial, and in the case of Muller Van Severen, this connection was established seamlessly. Hannes and Fien, both versatile creatives, have captivated us with their vision and passion—an inspiring blend of art and design.
As longtime admirers of their work, we were particularly eager to witness how their artistic perspective would manifest in the realm of hand-knotted carpets. Our role in the development of this carpet was advisory and technical, where we gladly contributed our expertise in material selection and technical considerations.
The use of Pashmina wool, known for its softness, adds a luxurious touch to the carpet. Its natural whiteness enhances the contrast with the vibrant colored surfaces. The 'gradient' in the blue segment, crafted from natural silk, injects dynamism and vitality into the overall design. In contrast, the colored wool sections exhibit a matte finish, creating a more pronounced and harmonious tempering effect.
The deliberate alternation of these raw materials introduces a captivating interplay of textures and colors, altering the viewer's perception as light interacts with the matte wool and exquisite silk components. This collaborative venture has resulted in a truly exceptional piece that seamlessly merges technical precision with artistic vision.
We take pride in sharing this unique creation with you, reflecting the harmonious convergence of craftsmanship and creativity.
